Who I am

 



Hello, I am a student from the U.S. who is interested in Chinese mythology. My purpose is to describe some chinse myths and give my though and insight on them. My perspective on these blogs is that people were trying to make sense of the world at the time they invented these myths and I will describe what I think about these myths and why people invented them. I will be looking at varying myths in the next couple of weeks. I will be looking at the myths of gods and goddesses how everything was created, water, fire, air, light and more. This blog is an assignment from my English class however I think that this is a nice break from the assignments we are used to, it is a good change of pace from the papers and writing we are used to.

A look at Genesis - Nüwa molding mankind, the Chinese myth

This myth revolves around Nüwa the half snake half human goddess. She lived isolated from everything in the heights of Mount Kunlun in northwestern China. She created clay figurines and breathed life into them. soon after this chaos erupted, wildfires broke out floods destroyed wildlife, the sky collapse and beasts grew. Nüwa being sympathetic to her non biological offspring came to mankind's aid. She sectioned off the legs of a turtle called Ao (鳌) , she set up dams to stop the rivers from flooding and brought peace and order to human society.   This is the myth called Genesis - Nüwa molding mankind and It shows Nüwa creating and saving humans. This is a different version of the myth of creation, it explains how humans and animals were made. However this is different from other myths because it doesn't show how the earth and universe was made but only how humans and animals were made. A look at Kindred spirits: the story of Boya and Ziqi the Chinese myth

There lived a musician called Boya. He was renowned for his expertise in gǔ qín (古琴), a portable string instrument that befitted the life of a reclusive wanderer. A woodcutter named Ziqi passed through his realms. Upon hearing his tunes, Ziqi nodded contemplatively, “There are high mountains and flowing waters in these notes you play.” Boya paused right there: never had anyone understood his music so keenly before! The two remained companions, but Ziqi eventually fell ill and passed away. A swansong later, Boya tore the strings of the instrument, and swore to never play again. To this day, the expression ‘zhī yīn’ (知音), literally translated as ‘[he/she who] knows the tune’, is still used to describe close friendships. This Is a Chinese myth about friendship and I think that this one doesn't have as much for me to talk about because friendship has been around forever and I think This is overall a very wholesome myth.  I like this myth because it is a good change of flow from the myt...
